CRS releases report on U.S. response to global malaria threat

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) released a report titled “U.S. Response to the Global Threat of Malaria: Basic Facts.” According to the summary, “[t]his report outlines basic facts related to global malaria, including characteristics of the epidemic and U.S. legislation, programs, funding, and partnerships related to the global response to malaria.”

PMI releases 6th Annual Malaria Report and other Administration actions commemorating World Malaria Day

On World Malaria Day, the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) released its 6th Annual Report, “which describes the role and contributions of the U.S. Government (USG) in the effort to reduce the burden of malaria in Africa, and to monitor antimalarial drug resistance and decrease malaria transmission in the Greater Mekong Subregion.”

Resolution supporting goals and ideals of World Malaria Day introduced in Senate

Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) introduced a resolution (S. Res. 429) supporting the goals and ideals of World Malaria Day. Among other things, the resolution commends efforts by the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) and “supports continued leadership by the United States in bilateral, multilateral, and private sector efforts to combat malaria as a critical part of the President’s Global Health Initiative.”

USAID Administrator Shah testifies before House Committee on Foreign Affairs on FY13 budget request

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah testified before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and provided a summary of the FY13 budget request for USAID highlighting efforts through the Feed the Future Initiative and the Global Health Initiative (GHI) including the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI).

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah testified before the House Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs and the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. During testimony before both Committees, Administrator Shah summarized the FY13 budget request for USAID and highlighted efforts through the Feed the Future Initiative and the Global Health Initiative (GHI) including the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI).

PMI releases external evaluation

The President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) released an external evaluation of the first five years (FY 2006-FY 2010) of the initiative. According to the report, PMI was evaluated on its ability to advance its goals, incorporate its four core principles, and partner at the global and country level. The report also provided an assessment of PMI’s program outcomes and impacts, operational research activities, and provided actionable recommendations for PMI improvement.

USAID expands malaria prevention program in Africa

In a press release, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the expansion of its Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) program in Africa through the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI).  The $189 million, three-year contract “will provide technical and financial support to the Ministries of Health and National Malaria Control Programs in African countries to build country-level capacity for malaria prevention activities.”

CRS releases report on USAID’s global health programs and funding

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) released a report titled “USAID Global Health Programs: FY2001-FY2012 Request.” In addition to providing an overview of USAID’s role in U.S. global health assistance, the report summarizes USAID funding for global health efforts from FY2001 to FY2012, and highlights several budget related policy questions.
