“PEPFAR Stewardship and Oversight Act” passed by Senate

The Senate approved by unanimous consent the “PEPFAR Stewardship and Oversight Act” (S.1545). Originally introduced by Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Bob Corker (R-TN), the proposed legislation extends existing authorities for five years and strengthens oversight of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). According to a press release from Senator Menendez, the bill includes the following provisions:

  1. Requires the State Department, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and Health and Human Services (HHS) Inspectors General to coordinator on oversight and audit plans;
  2. Extends per-patient cost study reporting requirements;
  3. Extends the 33% cap on U.S. contributions to the Global Fund;
  4. Updates annual PEPFAR reporting requirements; and
  5. Extends funding requirements for the treatment of orphans and vulnerable children.
