CBO releases cost estimate of “Electrify Africa Act of 2014”

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a cost estimate of the “Electrify Africa Act of 2014” (H.R. 2548). Introduced by Representatives Ed Royce (R-CA, 39th) and Eliot Engel (D-NY, 16th) and passed by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, the legislation would aim to improve access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa in order to support, among other things, improved food security and health delivery and outcomes. The CBO estimates that “implementing the legislation would save $86 million over the 2014-2019 period, assuming appropriation actions consistent with the bill.”
