Administration statements and actions commemorating International Women’s Day

In commemoration of International Women’s Day, Secretary of State John Kerry released a statement saying, among other things, that the “United States stands ready to protect and advance the health, education, and human rights of women and girls everywhere, because women’s progress is human progress.”

Additionally, First Lady Michelle Obama, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Catherine Russell, and Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Heather Higginbottom provided remarks during an event honoring recipients of the Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Awards, which “recognizes women who have exemplified exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for human rights, women’s equality, and social progress, often at great personal risk.”
