Webinar for Journalists: Results from Survey of People Who Bought Their Own Health Insurance Under the ACA

The Kaiser Family Foundation held a reporters-only webinar at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, June 19 to release its new Survey of Non-Group Health Insurance Enrollees, providing a first look at people buying their own health insurance following the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

The first in a series, the new survey captures the previous insurance status of marketplace enrollees and the self-reported health status of enrollees in ACA-compliant coverage purchased on or off the new marketplaces, a key group that insurers must use to set rate for next year. Other survey findings examine the experiences of people who switched plans due to policy cancellations or other reasons, and people’s experiences shopping for and enrolling in coverage, both on and off the marketplace.

The webinar featured the Foundation’s President and CEO Drew Altman, Director of Public Opinion and Survey Research Liz Hamel, and Senior Vice President Larry Levitt. After a brief presentation providing an overview of the survey, the Foundation’s experts took participants’ questions online and over the telephone.

The survey was conducted by telephone from April 3 through May 11 among a nationally representative random sample of 742 adults who purchase their own insurance, including those in ACA-compliant plans sold both inside and outside the state marketplaces, as well as those who remain in policies that took effect prior to Jan. 1, which in many cases would not comply with all the law’s requirements.
