Survey on Racism, Discrimination and Health

This report focuses on LGBT adults’ experiences with discrimination in their daily lives and reveals that LGBT adults are more likely than non-LGBT adults to report experiences with discrimination and unfair treatment in health care. It also examines LGBT adults’ experiences with mental health, accessing care, and homelessness.

This data note reviews our recent polling data that finds that Americans struggle to afford many aspects of health care, including disproportionate shares of uninsured adults, Black and Hispanic adults and those with lower incomes.

Majorities of U.S. adults perceive racism to be a major problem in politics, the criminal justice system, and policing, with some variance across racial and ethnic groups, while a third see racism as a major problem in health care. This may reflect high levels of trust in health care professionals compared to the police and the courts.
