This report provides a comprehensive look at U.S. participation in 50 significant international treaties and agreements that directly or indirectly touch on health issues.

The U.S. role in such agreements has attracted renewed policy attention as a result of the Obama Administration’s Global Health Initiative, which includes a focus on stronger multilateral engagement on global health and development issues. Such international agreements help to establish political and legal commitments, formalize international relationships, and coordinate roles and responsibilities internationally.

The 2013 Survey of Americans on the U.S. Role in Global Health examines the American public’s views, knowledge and opinions of U.S. efforts to improve health for people in developing countries. The fifth in a series that began in 2009, the survey explores the public’s views on global health spending and foreign aid, their priorities for the U.S. in world affairs, and the attention they pay to the issue of health in developing countries.

Rhode Island’s Chronic Care Sustainability Initiative (CSI) is a multi-payer patient-centered medical home program in which the one Medicaid health plan and all commercial health plans in the state participate. Hallmarks of the initiative are engaged leadership, mandatory participation but participatory governance, a common contract used by all payers, and investments in health information technology and other support for practice transformation.

Although many people require treatment for both physical and behavioral health conditions, our physical and behavioral health systems typically operate independently, without coordination. Medicaid has a significant stake in addressing this issue because physical and behavioral health comorbidity rates among beneficiaries are high. This brief examines five promising approaches currently underway in Medicaid to better integrate physical and behavioral health care.

This budget analysis reviews U.S. funding for global health programs included in the fiscal year 2014 omnibus appropriations bill signed into law on January 17, 2014. It examines funding by program area as well as trends over time.

This issue brief provides state level CHIP enrollment data, adding the June 2013 period. In June 2013, over 5.7 million children were enrolled in the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP.) Enrollment in June 2013 increased by 190,453 or by 3.4 percent, compared to one year earlier. Since 2009, annual rates of growth have remained fairly steady, ranging between 3.2 percent and 3.8 percent. In contrast, during the height of the Great Recession, enrollment increased annually by 7.8 to 10 percent. Overall, CHIP enrollment continued to increase, but growth slow to the lowest rates since the start of the Recession as the economic conditions continued to improve. CHIP programs, along with state Medicaid programs continue to play a critical role in assuring health coverage for uninsured children.
