“The U.N. Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (U.N. Women) [on Tuesday] became the 11th member of the Joint U.N. Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), a partnership that focuses on achieving universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support,” the U.N. News Centre reports, adding, “UNAIDS and U.N. Women will work together in a number of areas, including addressing the links between HIV and violence against women, and integrating gender equality into national HIV planning” (6/5). “The official joining of U.N. Women as a UNAIDS Cosponsor, which was approved at UNAIDS’ board meeting [Tuesday], will further strengthen the UNAIDS family’s work on gender equality and HIV and enhance collaboration with governments, international partners, women’s organizations and the women’s rights movement,” a UNAIDS press release states (6/5).
