Is dental coverage an essential health benefit?

Ver en Español

It depends on your age. Routine dental coverage for children ages 18 and under is an essential health benefit. This means it must be available to any children you have, either as a covered benefit under your health plan or as a free-standing dental plan. This is not the case for adults—insurers don’t have to offer adult dental coverage.

While we have made every effort to provide accurate information in these FAQs, people should contact the health insurance Marketplace or Medicaid agency in their state for guidance on their specific circumstances.
