Individuals who lose Medicaid or CHIP coverage as a result of the unwinding of the Medicaid Continuous Enrollment Provision and who live in Healthcare.gov states are eligible for a special enrollment period (Unwinding SEP) between March 31, 2023 and November 30, 2024. Consumers who are eligible for the Unwinding SEP have up to 60 days from the date they submit their application to choose a Marketplace plan. Additionally, when the Unwinding SEP ends in Healthcare.gov states, the existing special enrollment period due to loss of Medicaid or CHIP will be extended from 60 days to 90 days, which means consumers will have up to 90 days after loss of Medicaid or CHIP to enroll in Marketplace coverage.
State-based Marketplaces have the option to extend the Unwinding SEP from July 31, 2024 to November 30, 2024, but are not required to do so. They also have the option to extend the regular special enrollment period following loss of Medicaid or CHIP coverage to 90 days once the Unwinding SEP ends. Check with your state Marketplace for more information. If you are unsure if you reside in a State-based Marketplace or in a state where the Marketplace is offered on the federal platform (also known as a Healthcare.gov state or a State-based Marketplace-Federal Platform), click here for more information.
