Administration releases report identifying research needs to study the human health impacts of climate change

The Administration released a report titled “A Human Health Perspective On Climate Change: A Report Outlining the Research Needs on the Human Health Effects of Climate Change.” The report was produced by an interagency working group led by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and “highlights 11 key categories of diseases and other health consequences that are occurring or will occur due to climate change.”

CRS Report – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Global Health Programs: FY2001-FY2011

From the report summary: “This report explains the role CDC plays in U.S. global health assistance, highlights how much the agency has spent on global health efforts from FY2001 to FY2010, and discusses how funding to each of its programs has changed during this period.”

CRS Report – Foreign Aid Reform, National Strategy, and the Quadrennial Review

The report provides an overview of ongoing efforts in both Congress and the Administration to reform U.S. foreign assistance programs. Items reviewed in the report include:

- S. 1524, the Foreign Assistance Revitalization and Accountability Act of 2009;

- H.R. 2139, Initiating Foreign Assistance Reform Act of 2009;

- H.R. 2387, Strategy and Effectiveness of Foreign Policy and Assistance Act of 2009;

- The Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR); and

- The Presidential Study Directive on U.S. Global Development Policy (PSD).

Administration releases the “Lantos-Hyde United States Government Malaria Strategy”

The strategy outlines the goals, targets, and interventions that will guide the USG malaria programs from 2009-2014. The strategy provides details on the role of USG malaria programs in the Global Health Initiative (GHI), including the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), and aims to reduce the impact of malaria by focusing on Africa, incorporating a woman-centered approach, limiting the spread of drug resistant malaria, integrating with other health interventions, strengthening health systems, and linking U.S. government efforts to host-country strategies.

CRS Report – Foreign Aid: International Donor Coordination of Development Assistance

The report provides a summary of official development assistance (ODA), “discusses coordination goals established by donors at high-level development policy forums, and provides an overview of U.S. efforts to meet these goals. The report concludes by identifying key issues in donor coordination of development
assistance, with an emphasis on the U.S. perspective.”

Congressional Budget Office – Cost Estimate of S. 1382: Peace Corps Improvement and Expansion Act of 2010

Stating that “S. 1382 would indefinitely authorize the appropriation of such sums as may be necessary to
carry out the purposes of the Peace Corps,” the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) “that implementing the bill would cost about $2.5 billion over the 2011-2015 period, assuming that the estimated amounts are appropriated and that outlays follow historical spending patterns for Peace Corps programs.”

State Department and USAID release “Joint Summary of Performance and Financial Information for FY 2009″

The Department of State and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) released the “Joint Summary of Performance and Financial Information for FY 2009,” which summarizes the performance and financial results of both agencies towards U.S. diplomatic and development objectives.
