U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator discusses PEPFAR at USAID town hall
On May 2, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Deborah Birx provided remarks at a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) town hall on “her vision for the next stage of PEPFAR (the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief).” According to a USAID Impact Blog post titled “The Future of PEPFAR” by David Stanton, Director of the USAID’s Office of HIV/AIDS in the Bureau for Global Health summarizing the event, Dr. Birx outlined three areas that would be pushed forward during her leadership including: 1) “a renewed emphasis on an AIDS vaccine,” 2) “mobiliz[ing] and estabilish[ing] strong health systems so that [the U.S.] response to other diseases… can be quick, effective, and measurable,” and 3) “drawing on the unique strengths of all implementing agencies and creating opportunities for agency leadership to contribute their core strengths to PEPFAR.”
