Secretary Kerry provides remarks at The Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict

Secretary of State, John Kerry, provided remarks at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, which took place in London from June 10-13. During his remarks, Secretary Kerry summarized, among other things, U.S. efforts to end sexual violence through an expansion of the U.S. “Safe from the Start” initiative, which addresses gender-based violence (GBV) in global humanitarian emergencies, and the doubling of the U.S.’s original commitment to the Gender-Based Violence Emergency Response and Protection Initiative, a global program that addresses security needs of those who are under credible threat of GBV. Secretary Kerry also urged for the passage of the International Violence Against Women Act, which makes reducing the levels of violence against women and children a top U.S. priority, stated that the U.S. “support[s] a standalone goal of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the post-2015 development agenda,” and announced that he would be issuing a policy guidance cable across the U.S. Department of State “in order to further integrate gender equality and advance the status of women and girls in all aspects of our diplomatic work, including  preventing and responding to sexual violence in peacetime and conflict.”
