The U.S. will provide an additional $7.5 million in humanitarian assistance for refugees and internally displaced persons in Cote d’Ivoire and Liberia, according to a statement from the State Department on Wednesday, RTTNews reports (6/16).

The State Department “said the pledge will benefit the refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other conflict-affected populations in the region,” BNO News/Channel 6 News reports. Wednesday’s pledge brings the total amount of humanitarian assistance to the region to more than $51 million. “The latest U.S. contribution will include $6.5 million in support for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and $1 million for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)” (6/15). The additional aid will help provide food, health care, access to clean water and other services, according to the statement (6/15).
