AIDS 2010: Know Your Epidemic, Know Your Response: MSM and Their Needs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

For more information on this session, including access to speaker presentations, please see the conference Programme-at-a-Glance.

Around the world HIV continues to spread among men who have sex with men (MSM). Despite the fact that HIV prevalence in some communities reach up to 40%, most MSM have no access to relevant HIV prevention, care and treatment. Recognizing the need for a coordinated international response, this interactive session will begin with an overview of what we know about rates of HIV infection among MSM worldwide, the coverage of services provided to MSM, and what works (and what does not work) in responding to the needs of MSM in different settings. Data on successful community and outreach programs in different settings will be presented. In a moderated debate, leaders from community, including youth, religious and inter-governmental sectors, will identify concrete steps that concerned stakeholders can and should take to mount an effective response to the HIV epidemic among MSM. The focus of this session will be on MSM issues in low- and middle-income countries, with attention to Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
